Juyeon 2002 instructors: Linda van Deursen, Michael Rock Following the presentation on our thesis interest, everyone was assigned to work with a classmate on the exchange project. My project partner was Juyeon. I was supposed to create a piece of work presenting Juyeon's interest, which is "emotion," with my own methodology, which is "interface." Later I came up with the interview idea, and Juyeon agreed. During the two interviews, we talked about her thesis and her past emotional experiences. This conversation was deeper than any one Juyeon and I had had previously. The final product is an interactive piece. The text is from Juyeon's presentation transcript. Keywords in the text that either signify or evoke emotions are highlighted, such as "happy," "playful," or "tragedy." The movie is made up of 150 stills. Those stills are from a short section of the interview video by capturing one frame out of every second. The text and movie correspond in sequence but not in meaning--a certain text always goes with a certain still. So every screen is similar to a page in a book. Once the user clicks the arrow on the bottom, the text moves up a row and the movie continues to the next still. So the user's reading is linear. Once the user clicks the highlighted keyword of emotion, the piece jumps to a still in which Juyeon's facial expression illustrates that emotion the best. The user's reading is thus broken because the text accompanying the still has nothing to do with the text on the previous screen. |
