dragonfly vision 2002 instructors: Eddie Opara, George Plesko The idea is to use a cheap low-res webcam to track passers-by or other moving objects. A 640x480 (computer) screen is connected to the webcam to display the movement it captures. Instead of showing the original video stream, this piece has its own system of displaying things--every circle in the matrix detects the RGB values of a certain area in the video stream and adjusts its diameter and color based on the values. So what the user receives from the interface is not the world we normally see from a surveillance monitor. The user can only be vaguely aware of what is going on there. For example, the user knows someone passes, but can't tell who. So s/he can have some fun without invading other people's personal privacy. This piece can be installed behind the storefront windows, in clubs, and so on. |
